Geoff Taylor 9/4/23We’re sadden to report the passing of another long-standing North Gloucestershire Chess player. Geoff Taylor was a stalwart Gloucester chess club, a strong and active county player. He will be much missed by both team mates and opponents. His funeral will take place on April 24th at Gloucester Cemetery. Congratulations Ian Robson & Tristram De Piro 26-9-2320 players competed in the North Gloucestershire Individual Rapid Tournament held in Stroud on the first two Tuesdays of the month. First Prize was shared by Ian Robson and Tristram De Piro, who both finished on 5 out of 6. John Jenkins finished in 3rd place on 4.5, with Zack Norris on 3.5 picking up the Grading prize, which left David Jelfs on 3 with the junior prize. New Venue for Forest of Dean 26-9-23Forest of Dean have a new venue The Lamb Inn, New Road, Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire GL17 0BX   This is located to the left of the mini-roundabout as one approaches Mtcheldean on the A4136. The car park is reached by turning left at this roundabout onto Abenhall Road and then almost immediately right through the entrance gates. Matches are played in the restaurant room which is found when entering the rear pub entrance and proceeding to a closed wooden door at the end of a short corridor. From the front pub entrance use the left side door.as in previous years they continue to meet on Mondays. Dave Morse  12-12-22 I am sorry to say David Morse died on 1st December whilst he was in a Nursing home in Cheltenham. I first met David during the 1980s when I started playing chess at CEGB,  Barnwood . He also achieved a high standard in chess problem solving, reaching the final of The Daily Telegraph problem solving competition. His funeral will be held at Gloucester Crematorium at 3.30 pm on 20th December 2022.  Glenn Bourne New Season, New Teams! 26-9-23The first matches of the 2023-24 season kick off today, with the league seeing a welcome increase in the number of teams competing. Division 1 remains 6 teams with the welcome return of Gloucester to the division, but with the loss of Wotton Leopards. Division 2 sees both Stroud and Wotton Hall entering new teams, whilst in division 3 after the success of last year’s friendlies, Bishop’s Cleeve are entering the league for the first time. Along with Cheltenham fielding a team in the division, and a new Wotton Wombats team. Division 3 increases from 5 to 8 teams.It’s exciting to see the post Covid increase in chess reflected in the league.  

Ian Robson Retains Title

19-4-24 On Wednesday at Wotton Hall, Wotton Hall’s Ian Robson retained his title of North Gloucestershire individual championship with a win over Rich Maclannan and in so doing achieved an impressive and emphatic 6/6 score in the competition. Cotswold Congress 2024

15/4/24 The 54th Cotswold Congress is all set for The Spring Bank Holiday weekend, with six rounds played over 3 days starting on Saturday 25th May and finishing on the Bank Holiday Monday. As in recent years the venue is King's School, Pitt Street, Gloucester, GL1 2BG There will be three sections with the Open FIDE rated and including the Gloucestershire Individual County Championship. Stroud Summer Rapid 3/3/24 Following the Success of their first rapid tournament in many years, Stroud Chess club have recently announced the next one! The Stroud Summer Rapid will be held on 11th May 2024, once again at St Matthew's Church Hall. Stroud Spring Rapid20/1/24Last Saturday, for the first time in very many years, an open chess tournament was held in Stroud. The venue for the tournament, organised by Stroud Chess Club, was St Matthew's Church Hall and saw a total of 47 players competing for a range of prizes. Joint winners of the Tournament were International Master - Yichan Han and Stroud’s very own Indy Southcott-Moyers both players winning a £75 prize.There were 6 rating prizes of £30 each:0 - 500 rating range : Dmytro Romaniuk501 - 1430 rating range : Jacob Edwards1431 - 1600 rating range : Patrick Mulvey 1601 - 1700 rating range : Leon Nelson1701 - 1830 rating range : Elmira Walker 1831 - 1970 rating range : Alex Carey and a Junior prize also of £30 awarded to  Zack Norris.Stroud Chess Club would like to acknowledge the financial support of Stroud Town Council in making this tournament possible.
