NGCA Lightning Tournament 28/12/24 The traditional pre Christmas Lightning tournament took place on Monday 16th December. Once again this event was kindly hosted by the Cheltenham club, with Nigel Hosken Controlling. There were 27 competitors, including two IM’s, and with 12 players rated over 2000, this has to be the strongest field for this event in very many years. Much fun was had by all who participated, in the end, David Buckley and Indy Southcott Moyers shared 1st prize on 5/6 whilst Andy Horton, Conor Murphy and Oliver Stubbs all finished ½ point behind and got their £2 entry fees refunded! Full details can be found in the results section of the site.
Phil Meade 1/3/25 The sad news of the death of Phil Meade reached us on 22nd February. Phil was a true stalwart of chess in North Gloucestershire, a long standing member of Cheltenham Chess Club, a strong player and qualified arbiter. Phil was often to be found arbiting at The Cotswold and other local Congress. For many years he helped with the running of the North Gloucestershire Individual Championship, a tournament which he won in 2017. Phil also undertook the job of drawing up the North Gloucestershire league fixtures, something he did with his characteristic care and attention to detail. He will be greatly missed.
